How the 2026 FIFA World Cup Bracket Works

The knockout stage runs from June 28 to July 19, 2026. The 2026 FIFA World Cup bracket follows this path: Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Third-Place Match, and Final.

Thirty-two teams reach the bracket: the top two from each of the 12 groups (24 teams) plus the eight best third-placed finishers. The Round of 32 is new for this edition, added because the field expanded from 32 to 48 teams. It is the first time a World Cup includes this round.

Every knockout match is single elimination. If the score is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time is played. If still tied, a penalty shootout decides who advances.

The full bracket locks once the group stage ends on June 27. The eight best third-placed teams are confirmed at that point, and each group winner is paired with a pre-set opponent.

The Round of 32 spreads 16 matches across six days, with one match on June 28 and three matches per day after that. Mexico and Canada keep hosting through the Round of 16, including matches in Mexico City and Vancouver, and from the quarterfinals onward every match is held in the United States.

How the Round of 32 is Seeded

Each Round of 32 tie is pre-set by group position, so the printable bracket can be filled the moment the group stage ends. Group winners are drawn against runners-up or one of the eight best third-placed teams from specific groups, keeping the top sides on opposite sides of the bracket.
