How the Round of 32 Works (Format)

Each of the twelve groups sent its top two teams into the knockout phase, filling 24 of the 32 places. The last eight went to the best third-placed teams, ranked across all twelve groups by points, then goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary record and FIFA World Ranking.

2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 bracket

Every tie was single-elimination. If the score was level after 90 minutes, two 15-minute periods of extra time followed, and a penalty shootout decided the winner if still level. Three of the 16 matches were settled on penalties.

Because eight of twelve third-placed teams advance, FIFA could not fix the pairings in advance, so it pre-set 495 bracket combinations in Annex C of the tournament regulations.

Three rules always held: group winners never met another winner in this round, third-placed teams always faced a group winner, and no team faced a side from its own group. The bracket locked when group play ended on June 27, with no further draw.
