How the Round of 32 Works (Format)
The Round of 32 starts right after the group stage ends on June 27, 2026. Each of the twelve groups sends its top two teams into the knockout phase. That fills twenty-four of the thirty-two spots. The last eight spots go to the best third-place teams across all twelve groups.
FIFA ranks third-place teams using six criteria in this exact order:
- Points earned in the group stage
- Goal difference
- Total goals scored
- Fair play score (yellow and red cards)
- FIFA World Ranking
- Drawing of lots
Every match is single-elimination. A tied score after ninety minutes leads to thirty minutes of extra time. Two fifteen-minute halves make up that extra period. A penalty shootout decides the winner if teams are still tied after extra time.
The 495-Scenario Bracket System
Eight of the twelve third-place teams move into the Round of 32. This means FIFA cannot fix all pairings before the group stage ends.
FIFA solved this by pre-planning 495 different bracket setups. These appear in Annex C of the official tournament regulations. Each setup covers one possible combination of eight third-place teams advancing from twelve groups.
Three rules stay fixed no matter which teams advance:
- Group winners face a runner-up or a third-place team. They never face another group winner.
- Third-place teams always face group winners. They never face runners-up or each other.
- No team faces a team from its own group in the Round of 32.
The bracket locks on June 27 once all group matches finish. No second draw takes place after that point.

World Cup 2026 Round of 32 Bracket (Current Scenario)
The Round of 32 bracket maps the path to the World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19, 2026. It connects every knockout match and shows who each team could face in later rounds.
The winner of Match 73 faces the winner of Match 75 in the Round of 16. This flow continues right through to the final. The bracket places the four top-seeded nations (Spain, Argentina, France and England) so that none of them can meet each other before the semifinals.

The bracket does not redraw at any stage. The full path to the final locks on June 27. Teams that reach the final in 2026 play eight total matches. That is one more than any team played to win the title since 2002.
The bracket updates after every match. A printable version goes live once FIFA confirms all 32 qualified teams.

WC 2026 Round of 32 FAQs
Is the Round of 32 the same as the Round of 16?
No. The Round of 32 and the Round of 16 are two separate knockout rounds. The Round of 32 is brand new to the World Cup. It runs June 28 to July 3 with 16 matches. The Round of 16 follows right after from July 4 to 7. Every World Cup from 1986 to 2022 started its knockout phase with the Round of 16. The 2026 World Cup adds the Round of 32 before it.
Can a team that finishes third in their group still win the World Cup?
Yes. Eight third-place teams advance to the Round of 32. From that point they have the same shot at the title as every other qualified team. World Cup history shows that underdog teams can go deep once the knockout rounds begin.
What are the 495 scenarios and why do they matter?
Eight of the twelve third-place teams advance to the Round of 32. There are 495 different possible combinations of which eight teams those could be. FIFA pre-planned a bracket setup for all 495 of those combinations before the tournament started. Once the group stage ends the bracket locks into the right setup on its own. No extra draw takes place after the group stage finishes.
What happens if a Round of 32 match ends in a tie?
No knockout match can end in a draw. Teams play 30 minutes of extra time split into two 15-minute halves. A penalty shootout decides the winner if the score stays level after extra time.
Will VAR be used in the Round of 32?
Yes. Video Assistant Referee technology runs throughout all knockout matches. VAR checks goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity.
Can I watch Round of 32 matches on free TV?
It depends on your country. In the United States, FOX and FS1 carry all matches in English. Telemundo covers them in Spanish. Many other countries have free public broadcaster coverage. Check local TV listings as the tournament gets closer for full channel and streaming details.
What is different about the 2026 World Cup format compared to 2022?
The 2026 World Cup expands from 32 to 48 teams and from 8 to 12 groups. The Round of 32 did not exist in 2022. Teams now need up to eight wins to lift the trophy instead of seven. The total match count rises from 64 to 104 across the full tournament.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 opens on June 28 and brings sixteen knockout matches across six days of football across North America. Thirty-two teams fight for a spot in the Round of 16 at iconic stadiums from Mexico City to Miami. Check back after June 27 for the confirmed bracket and full list of qualified teams once the group stage wraps up.
