How the 2026 FIFA World Cup Bracket Works

The knockout stage runs from June 28 to July 19, 2026 through six single-elimination rounds: Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Third-Place Match, and Final.

Thirty-two teams reach the bracket: the top two from each of the 12 groups (24 teams) plus the eight best third-placed finishers. The Round of 32 is new for this edition, added when the field expanded from 32 to 48 teams, and it is the first time a World Cup has included this round.

Every tie is settled on the day. If the score is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time is played, then a penalty shootout decides who advances. The bracket locked once the group stage ended on June 27. Each pairing is pre-set by group position, with group winners drawn against runners-up or a best third-placed team from specific groups, a system that keeps the strongest sides on opposite halves of the draw until the Final.
