Scotland World Cup History & Record
Scotland has reached the World Cup nine times, starting in 1954. No country has attended more tournaments without advancing past the group stage. Eight previous appearances and zero knockout rounds. The 2026 tournament is Scotland’s best chance yet to change that.
1954 Switzerland: Scotland’s debut ended badly. A 1-0 loss to Austria saw manager Andy Beattie resign mid-tournament. A 7-0 defeat to Uruguay followed, still Scotland’s heaviest World Cup loss. They left without scoring a single goal.
1958 Sweden: Scotland earned their first World Cup point with a 1-1 draw against Yugoslavia. Losses to Paraguay (3-2) and France (2-1) ended the campaign.
1974 West Germany: Scotland’s finest group stage run. They went unbeaten, beating Zaire 2-0 and drawing with both Brazil and Yugoslavia. No other team in the tournament went unbeaten, including eventual champions West Germany. Scotland still went home on goal difference. They became the first team in World Cup history to exit without losing a single game.
1978 Argentina: Scotland arrived with huge expectations. A 3-1 loss to Peru and a 1-1 draw with Iran left them needing a three-goal win over the Netherlands. Archie Gemmill’s solo run through three Dutch defenders became one of the greatest World Cup goals ever. Scotland won 3-2 but needed one more goal. Eliminated on goal difference again.
1982 Spain: Scotland beat New Zealand 5-2 but lost 4-1 to Brazil and drew 2-2 with the Soviet Union. Goal difference ended their campaign for the third straight tournament. No other nation in World Cup history holds that record.
1986 Mexico: Manager Jock Stein collapsed and died from a heart attack right after Scotland secured qualification against Wales at Ninian Park, Cardiff. Alex Ferguson took charge for the tournament in Mexico. Scotland lost to Denmark (0-1) and West Germany (1-2) and drew 0-0 with Uruguay. They scored just one goal and finished bottom of Group E.
1990 Italy: Scotland beat Sweden 2-1 in game two but losses to Costa Rica and Brazil sent them home. One win, one draw and one loss was not enough.
1998 France: Scotland played in the opening game of the entire tournament against Brazil. John Collins scored from the spot to make it 1-1 at half-time. A Tom Boyd own goal gave Brazil the 2-1 win. A 1-1 draw with Norway followed before a 3-0 loss to Morocco ended the campaign. That Saint-Etienne defeat was Scotland’s last World Cup game until 2026.
2026 USA, Canada and Mexico: Scotland’s ninth World Cup. Their first since 1998. Full schedule is above.

Scotland World Cup Predictions and Analysis
Scotland landed in Group C alongside Brazil, Morocco and Haiti. Brazil bring five World Cup titles. Morocco reached the Qatar 2022 semifinals and knocked out Belgium, Spain and Portugal. Haiti return for the first time since 1974.
The Haiti opener on June 13 in Boston is Scotland’s clearest route to three points. Win that and the rest of the campaign opens up. Morocco is the real test with strong defensive structure and proven experience. A point there would be a fine result. Brazil in Miami on June 24 depends on where Scotland stand at that point.
The 2026 format sends the top two in each group through. The eight best third-placed teams also advance to the Round of 32. Four points from three games would likely be enough to survive even without finishing top two. That gives Scotland a path that no previous World Cup format offered.
Scott McTominay scored the overhead kick that opened the Denmark qualifier. Andrew Robertson captains from left back. John McGinn brings goals and energy from midfield. Kieran Tierney adds defensive quality when fit. Billy Gilmour controls the tempo. Lawrence Shankland leads the attack. Steve Clarke builds on defensive shape first and Scotland are hard to break down. This squad carries more attacking quality than any previous Scotland side at a World Cup.
