Third-place teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, goals scored, the team conduct score (yellow and red cards), and finally FIFA World Ranking. There is no drawing of lots at the 2026 World Cup.

How the 2026 World Cup Format Works

FIFA expanded the field from 32 to 48 teams, split into 12 groups of four. Each team played 3 group games, earning 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. The top two from every group (24 teams) plus the 8 best third-place finishers made up the 32-team Round of 32.

The tournament ran 104 matches over 39 days across 16 stadiums in three countries—40 more games than the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The knockout path ran from the brand-new Round of 32 through the Round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals to the final on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Spain were crowned champions.

World Cup 2026 Tiebreaker Rules

FIFA changed the tiebreakers for 2026. For the first time, head-to-head results come before overall goal difference, and the drawing of lots has been removed. Here is the order from Article 13 of the FIFA World Cup 26 Regulations for teams level on points:

  1. Head-to-head points in the matches between the tied teams.
  2. Head-to-head goal difference between the tied teams.
  3. Head-to-head goals scored between the tied teams.
  4. Overall goal difference across all group matches.
  5. Overall goals scored in the group stage.
  6. Team conduct score based on yellow and red cards (yellow −1, second yellow −3, direct red −4, yellow + direct red −5).
  7. FIFA World Ranking—the higher-ranked team advances. This replaces the old drawing of lots.

Goal difference led every World Cup tiebreaker from 1970 to 2022, but it now sits behind the head-to-head criteria, the same model UEFA uses at the European Championship.

Who finished third at the 2026 World Cup?

England took third place, beating France 6-4 in the third-place playoff in Miami Gardens on July 18, 2026. France finished fourth.

How many teams qualify from each group in the 2026 World Cup?

Two teams qualify automatically from every group: the winner and the runner-up. The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance, for a total of 32 teams in the Round of 32.

How are the best third-placed teams ranked?

The 12 third-placed teams are compared by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then fair-play record, then FIFA World Ranking. Only the top eight reach the Round of 32. At the 2026 World Cup, DR Congo, Sweden, Ecuador, Ghana, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Algeria, Paraguay, and Senegal took the eight spots.

What happens if teams are tied on points?

Head-to-head results decide it first: head-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference, then head-to-head goals scored. If teams are still level, FIFA applies overall goal difference, overall goals scored, the fair-play record, and finally the FIFA World Ranking.

What is goal difference?

Goal difference is total goals scored minus goals conceded across the group stage. A team that scores 5 and concedes 2 has a goal difference of +3. In 2026 it is applied after the head-to-head criteria for teams level on points.

Are away goals used in the 2026 World Cup?

No. Every match is played at a neutral venue, so there are no away goals at any stage of the tournament.
