How the UEFA Playoff Format Works

The 16 teams split into four independent paths. Each path held exactly four teams and crowned one World Cup qualifier.

Teams went into four pots based on FIFA Rankings from November 2025. Pot 1 teams hosted Pot 4 teams in the semi-finals. Pot 2 teams hosted Pot 3 teams. A separate draw decided which semi-final winner hosted the final.

Every match used a knockout format. Win and advance. Lose and go home. A match level after 90 minutes went to 30 minutes of extra time. Teams got one extra substitution in extra time for a maximum of six total. A penalty shootout decided the winner if scores stayed level after extra time.

Yellow cards from the qualifying group stage carried over into the semi-finals. Cards reset completely before the finals.

World Cup UEFA Playoffs Teams

Italy (FIFA Rank 9)

Italy entered their third straight playoff after losing to Sweden in 2018 and North Macedonia knocking them out in 2022. Gennaro Gattuso took charge on June 15, 2025 after Luciano Spalletti got sacked following a 3-0 away defeat to Norway in their opening qualifier. Italy beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in the semi-final at the New Balance Arena in Bergamo. Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean scored. Gattuso personally chose Bergamo over San Siro for the atmosphere. He said: “I believe that when you go to a 60,000-seat stadium like San Siro there are Inter and Milan fans and they might start booing after a few wrong passes.”

The final in Zenica ended in heartbreak. Kean put Italy ahead in the 15th minute. Bastoni received a red card in the 42nd minute. Haris Tabaković equalized in the 79th minute. Italy missed two penalties in the shootout and lost 4-1. Italy have now missed three consecutive World Cups.

Denmark (FIFA Rank 20)
