What are the 2026 World Cup Inter-Confederation Playoffs?
The official name is the FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament. It filled the last two spots in the 48-team World Cup field.
Six teams from five different confederations took part. UEFA is the only confederation not in this tournament. Europe runs its own separate 16-team playoff to fill four spots.
FIFA confirmed the slot allocation back in 2017. Each non-UEFA confederation gets one playoff spot. CONCACAF gets two spots because the United States, Mexico and Canada are the three co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup.
| Confederation | Spots | Team |
|---|---|---|
| AFC (Asia) | 1 | Iraq |
| CAF (Africa) | 1 | DR Congo |
| CONCACAF (North America) | 2 | Jamaica, Suriname |
| CONMEBOL (South America) | 1 | Bolivia |
| OFC (Oceania) | 1 | New Caledonia |
How the Inter-Confederation Playoff Format Works
The six teams split into two separate pathways. Each pathway ended with one team earning a World Cup spot.
FIFA seeded the teams using the official FIFA Men’s World Ranking from November 19, 2025. The top two ranked teams went straight to the finals. They skipped the semi-finals and only needed to win one match to reach the World Cup. The other four teams were unseeded and had to win two matches in a row to qualify.
Stage 1 — Semi-Finals (March 26, 2026): Four unseeded teams played two matches. Winners moved on. Losers went home.
Stage 2 — Finals (March 31, 2026): Each semi-final winner faced one seeded team. Both final winners earned a 2026 World Cup spot.
- Seeded (Direct to Finals): DR Congo (FIFA #56), Iraq (FIFA #58)
- Unseeded (Must Play Semi-Finals): Jamaica, New Caledonia, Bolivia, Suriname
Every match was one game only. No return legs and no second chances. A match tied at 90 minutes went to 30 minutes of extra time. Teams got a sixth substitution during extra time. A match still tied after extra time got decided by a penalty shootout.
VAR covered goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity. Yellow cards picked up in the semi-finals carried into the finals but did not carry forward to the World Cup itself.

Inter-Confederation Playoff Match Venues in Mexico
FIFA picked Mexico to host all four matches. Both stadiums serve as official World Cup venues in summer 2026. FIFA used this playoff window as a test run before the main tournament begins in June.
During the competition both venues carried FIFA-approved names because their naming rights partners are not official FIFA sponsors.
Estadio Akron (Guadalajara): officially Estadio Guadalajara
This stadium opened in 2010 as the home of Club Deportivo Guadalajara (Chivas). It holds 48,071 fans and has a covered roof over every seat. Guadalajara sits at 1,566 meters above sea level. The stadium hosts four group stage matches during the 2026 World Cup.
Estadio BBVA (Monterrey): officially Estadio Monterrey
CF Monterrey plays home games at this 2015-built stadium. Capacity sits at 53,529 fans. The steep seating design puts supporters very close to the pitch. Monterrey sits at 540 meters above sea level. This venue hosts three group stage matches and one Round of 32 match during the World Cup.

Inter-Confederation Playoffs: All Six Teams
Iraq (FIFA Rank 58) | Seeded | Path 2
Iraq secured their spot with one of the most dramatic moments in Asian qualifying history. A stoppage-time penalty from Amir Al-Ammari in the 90+17th minute of the second leg against UAE sealed a 3-2 aggregate win. Iraq then beat Bolivia 2-1 in the final to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986. They ended a 40-year wait.
DR Congo (FIFA Rank 56) | Seeded | Path 1
DR Congo earned their place through a four-team CAF playoff. They beat Cameroon in the semi-final then defeated Nigeria 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final in Rabat on November 16, 2025. In the inter-confederation final they beat Jamaica 1-0 after extra time through Axel Tuanzebe’s 100th-minute goal from a corner. DR Congo qualify for their first World Cup under that name. The country last appeared at the tournament in 1974 as Zaire.
Jamaica (FIFA Rank 70) | Unseeded | Path 1
Jamaica finished as one of the two best group runners-up in CONCACAF qualifying. They missed automatic qualification on the final matchday when Curaçao held them to a 0-0 draw. Jamaica beat New Caledonia 1-0 in the semi-final to reach the Path 1 final. They then lost 1-0 to DR Congo after extra time. Jamaica last played at a World Cup in 1998 and came one match short of returning.
Suriname (FIFA Rank 123) | Unseeded | Path 2
Suriname finished as the second-best CONCACAF group runner-up in their qualifying round. They lost 2-1 to Bolivia in the semi-final and their World Cup dream ended at the first hurdle. A World Cup place would have been the first in their national history.
Bolivia (FIFA Rank 76) | Unseeded | Path 2
Bolivia finished 7th in South American qualifying and claimed the one available CONMEBOL playoff spot. They won 6 of their 18 qualifying matches collecting 20 points. Bolivia beat Suriname 2-1 in the semi-final to reach the final against Iraq. Bolivia have traditionally played best at altitude in La Paz at 3,600 meters but that edge did not exist in Mexico. Iraq beat them 2-1 in the final.
New Caledonia (FIFA Rank 149) | Unseeded | Path 1
New Caledonia reached the OFC final but lost 3-0 to New Zealand. As OFC runner-up they advanced to the inter-confederation playoffs for the first time in OFC history. New Caledonia is a French Pacific territory with a population of around 270,000 people. They lost 1-0 to Jamaica in the semi-final. Their presence at this stage was itself a milestone for Oceania football.
Key Storylines
DR Congo end 52 years of waiting. The nation that competed as Zaire in 1974 is back at the World Cup. Axel Tuanzebe, who plays his club football for Burnley in the English Premier League, scored the only goal in the 100th minute against Jamaica to send DR Congo to Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
Iraq’s 40-year wait is over. A stoppage-time penalty in Asian qualifying started the journey. Iraq then beat Bolivia 2-1 in Monterrey to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986. Aymen Hussein scored the decisive goal in the 53rd minute. Iraq face France, Senegal and Norway in Group I this summer.
Jamaica fall one match short. The Reggae Boyz beat New Caledonia 1-0 in the semi-final but could not find a goal against DR Congo in the final. Jamaica have not played at a World Cup since 1998.
New Caledonia make history. Reaching the inter-confederation playoffs as OFC runner-up was a first for the Pacific territory. They lost to Jamaica in the semi-final but their campaign was a landmark moment for football in Oceania
