The schedule runs from June 13 through July 7, covering five group stage fixtures, a Round of 32, and a Round of 16. BC Place World Cup 2026 carries real weight: Canada plays twice here in front of a home crowd, and this stadium already has a World Cup final on its record.
BC Place sits in downtown Vancouver at 777 Pacific Boulevard, a 10-minute walk from the city center. Getting here is straightforward. Stadium-Chinatown SkyTrain Station exits directly opposite the north gates.
This guide covers the schedule, how to get there, where to stay, and what to expect on match day.

Vancouver Stadium (BC Place): Overview and History
BC Place opened on June 19, 1983, built as part of Vancouver’s preparations for Expo 86. Its original air-supported dome roof was the largest of its kind in the world, and the stadium cost roughly $126 million CAD to build. The BC Lions and Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS, from 2011) both call it home.
The 2010 Winter Olympics prompted a full overhaul. BC Place hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, then closed for 16 months. Workers replaced the inflatable dome with a retractable cable-supported roof, the largest of its type in the world at completion, and the stadium reopened in 2011 with its current 54,500 capacity.
For 2026, PavCo invested between $171 million and $181 million in upgrades and operational costs. Key changes include a new centre-suspended video board, locker room upgrades, expanded washrooms, and Fraser Valley natural grass replacing the artificial FieldTurf.
FIFA mandates grass at all 2026 venues. Vancouver’s seven-match load ranks it among the busiest sites in the group stage draw.

Interesting Facts and Stadium Highlights
Record-breaking roof: When the retractable cable-supported roof opened in 2011, it held the record as the largest of its type in the world. For the World Cup it stays open. FIFA requires natural light for grass pitches, so the roof cannot close during matches regardless of weather.
The 2015 Women’s World Cup Final: On July 5, 2015, the United States beat Japan 5–2 here in the most-watched women’s soccer match in American TV history. Carli Lloyd scored a hat-trick in 16 minutes, including a goal from the halfway line. The attendance was 53,341.
World Cup capacity drops from regular: For MLS and CFL events BC Place holds 54,500. FIFA-confirmed capacity for 2026 is 48,821, reduced for pitch and tournament overlay requirements.
Ten Grey Cup finals: BC Place has hosted the CFL championship in 1983, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1994, 1999, 2005, 2011, 2014, and 2024. No other Canadian stadium in this tournament matches that record.
Three Olympic ceremonies in six weeks: In early 2010, BC Place hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics and the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Winter Games, all on the same field.
Travel Tips for Visiting Fans
Getting to the Stadium
Take the SkyTrain. Stadium-Chinatown Station on the Expo Line is a 90-second walk from BC Place’s north gates. From downtown or Yaletown the trip takes under 10 minutes. From YVR airport, ride the Canada Line to Waterfront Station (about 25 minutes), then transfer one stop east on the Expo Line to Stadium-Chinatown. The full trip runs roughly 30 to 35 minutes.
With a Compass Card, the one-zone adult fare is $2.70 for June matches (rising to $2.85 from July 1, 2026). Trips starting at YVR carry a $5.00 AddFare on top of the regular fare (rising to $6.50 from July 1). Buy your Compass Card at the airport on arrival. Driving is not recommended; parking downtown is scarce and expensive on event days.
Where to Stay
Yaletown is the closest neighbourhood, a 5 to 10-minute walk from the stadium. It has converted warehouse restaurants, wine bars, and boutique hotels along the False Creek seawall. Book early. World Cup rates here will be steep.
Gastown and the West End offer budget-friendly options a short SkyTrain ride away. Richmond (one Canada Line stop south) and Burnaby have solid mid-range stock with easy transit connections and are close to YVR.
Weather Tips
June averages highs of 65°F (18°C) and lows of 51°F (11°C). July is warmer at 75°F (24°C) highs and 56°F (13°C) lows. Rain is common in June. The roof stays open per FIFA rules, so bring a waterproof layer for evening matches.
After the Match
SkyTrain queues build fast after a sell-out. Walk west along Pacific Boulevard toward Yaletown instead. The False Creek seawall runs along the stadium’s south side and makes for a good post-match walk while the crowds thin. Mainland Street in Yaletown absorbs the overflow well.
What to Expect on Match Day
Gates open three hours before kick-off. Arrive at least 90 minutes early. Security at the Pacific Boulevard gates moves slowly for a full house. BC Place operates a clear-bag policy: bags must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC, no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″. Small clutch bags (up to 4.5″ x 6.5″) are also permitted.
No outside food or drinks, no sealed or open alcohol, no flag poles longer than one metre, no large umbrellas. The new centre-suspended video board gives clear sightlines from all sections. The lower bowl is louder; upper sections have better sightlines but less atmosphere. For Canada’s matches, expect the noise level to take care of itself by anthem time.
FIFA Fan Festival in Vancouver
The official FIFA Fan Festival runs June 11 to July 19 at the PNE fairgrounds in Hastings Park, about 4 km east of downtown. Entry is free, confirmed by the City of Vancouver and FIFA. The PNE Amphitheatre screens live matches for up to 2,600 people on a first-come, first-served basis, with premium reserved seating available to purchase. Total daily capacity across the full fairgrounds is 25,000.
The PNE is a century-old community fairground with rides, local food, and a neighbourhood atmosphere no purpose-built fan zone can match. From downtown, take the Expo Line to Hastings Street or bus 14 or 16 east. Full details at the official Vancouver FWC26 Fan Festival page.
How to Buy Tickets for BC Place Matches
All official tickets sell through FIFA’s official ticketing platform. Group stage prices run from $35 USD (Category 4) to $305 (Category 1), with knockout matches priced higher. See the ticket guide for full tier pricing.
