FIFA World Cup 2026 Haiti: Schedule, How to Watch, History & Record

Haiti is back at the World Cup for the first time in 52 years. Les Grenadiers topped CONCACAF Group C on the final day of qualifying last November and ended one of football’s longest World Cup droughts.

This is only Haiti’s second appearance at football’s biggest stage. Their first came in 1974. Now they face Brazil, Morocco and Scotland in Group C across three stadiums in the eastern United States.

The 1974 Tournament in West Germany

Haiti drew a brutal Group 4 with Italy, Poland and Argentina — three of the top sides in the tournament.

Haiti went home winless. They scored 2 goals and gave up 14. But the tournament still produced one of the most memorable moments in Haitian football history.

Just one minute into the second half against Italy, Emmanuel Sanon ran onto a through ball from Philippe Vorbe and slid the ball past Dino Zoff to put Haiti 1-0 up. That goal ended Zoff’s record run of 1,142 consecutive minutes without conceding in international football. Over 51,000 fans were inside Olympiastadion Munich to witness it. Italy came back to win 3-1 but that moment belongs to Haiti forever. Sanon scored again against Argentina in the final group game. Both of Haiti’s World Cup goals belong to him.

The tournament also had a dark chapter. Defender Ernst Jean-Joseph became the first player in World Cup history to fail a doping test.

Getting to 2026

Haiti could not play any home qualifying games. Gang violence and political instability in Port-au-Prince made it impossible to host international matches. The team played every single CONCACAF Final Round game in Curacao instead — about 500 miles from home.

Coach Sebastien Migne, a Frenchman who took charge in summer 2024, has never been to Haiti due to the security situation. He previously led Kenya to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Haiti’s Final Round qualifying record in Group C:

Haiti vs. Honduras0-0 D
Haiti vs. Costa Rica3-3 D
Haiti vs. Nicaragua3-0 W
Honduras vs. Haiti3-0 L

Haiti topped the group on goal difference over Honduras after both sides finished on 8 points. The final win over Nicaragua sealed it. Louicius Deedson scored in the 9th minute and Ruben Providence added a header just before halftime. People took to the streets across Haiti after the final whistle.

Haiti World Cup Predictions and Analysis

Group C is about as tough as it gets for Haiti. Brazil have won the World Cup five times. Morocco reached the semifinals at Qatar 2022 and knocked out Belgium, Spain and Portugal along the way. Scotland are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Scotland gives Haiti their best shot at getting points. Both teams need a result badly. A win or draw in Boston puts Haiti in a much better position heading into the Brazil game.

Brazil is the biggest challenge in the group. Haiti will need to defend deep and stay organized. Getting even one point from that game would be a massive achievement.

Morocco is no pushover either. They defend well and know how to grind out results. The Atlanta game is a must-play moment for Haiti if they want any chance of advancing.

Key players to watch: goalkeeper Johny Placide captains the side and kept four clean sheets in qualifying. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde plays midfield for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League and gives Haiti a genuine top-level presence. He switched international allegiance to Haiti in August 2025. Duckens Nazon is Haiti’s all-time leading scorer and top scorer in qualifying with 6 goals. Frantzdy Pierrot leads the line and was one of the team’s most dangerous forwards throughout the qualifying campaign.

Under the expanded 48-team format, the top two teams in each group advance automatically. Eight of the 16 third-place finishers also move on. That gives Haiti a real path forward even if they do not win the group.

Haiti FIFA World Cup 2026 FAQs

1974 in West Germany. That is a 52-year gap. Haiti is the only Caribbean country to make it back to a second World Cup.

Who coaches Haiti for the 2026 World Cup?

Sebastien Migne runs the team. He is a Frenchman who took the job in summer 2024. He guided Kenya to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. He has never visited Haiti because it is too dangerous right now.

Why does Haiti play matches away from home?

Who are Haiti’s star players to watch?

Is Haiti the only Caribbean nation at the World Cup?

Yes. Haiti is the only Caribbean team at the 2026 tournament. They are also the only Caribbean country to qualify twice. Cuba went in 1938. Jamaica made it in 1998. Trinidad and Tobago went in 2006. None of them came back for a second time.
