FIFA World Cup 2026 Squad Announcement Dates: Full Timeline and Deadlines
Forty-eight teams. 1,248 players. One deadline clock ticking down to the biggest World Cup ever. With all qualifying spots now settled, attention turns to squad selection, and the countdown has already started.
Here’s what you need to know upfront: preliminary squads of up to 55 players are due May 11, 2026, and the final 26-man lists must be submitted by June 1, 2026. The tournament opens June 11 with Mexico vs South Africa at Estadio Azteca.
This guide breaks down every squad deadline, rule, and replacement policy for World Cup 2026.

World Cup 2026 Squad Deadlines at a Glance
Mark these dates on your calendar:
- May 11, 2026: Preliminary squad deadline (35 to 55 players per team)
- May 25, 2026: Club release deadline for named players
- June 1, 2026: Final 26-man squad deadline
- June 11, 2026: Tournament opener, Mexico vs South Africa, Estadio Azteca
Every one of the 48 federations must hit these same dates. No exceptions, no extensions.
Preliminary Squad Deadline on May 11, 2026
Each national team submits a provisional list of between 35 and 55 players to FIFA by May 11. The list must include at least four goalkeepers. This is one month before the tournament opens and gives coaching staff a wide pool to work with.
FIFA does not publish these preliminary lists. That’s an important detail. Many fans expect a big public reveal on May 11, but the release is internal. However, most national federations announce their own versions publicly, which is why you’ll see “England’s 55-man preliminary squad” headlines around that date even though FIFA stays quiet.
Why such a big list? Late-season injuries, form dips, and European club finals all create uncertainty. Coaches want flexibility until the last possible moment before trimming down to 26.
Final Squad Deadline on June 1, 2026
This is the one fans wait for. By June 1, every team must submit its final 26-man squad to FIFA, including at least three goalkeepers, ten days before the tournament opens. Teams can go as low as 23 players if they choose, but most will take the full 26.
Coaches trim the preliminary pool down to their final selection in the roughly three-week window between May 11 and June 1. The players who make it are the ones who travel to North America and get the chance to play in the tournament.
Once June 1 passes, the only way to change the squad is through FIFA’s injury replacement process, which we’ll cover below.
Why Squads Stayed at 26 Players
When Qatar 2022 expanded squads from 23 to 26, many federations expected another bump for 2026. The reasoning was simple: the expanded 48-team format added a Round of 32, meaning teams now need eight wins instead of seven to lift the trophy. More matches, more minutes, more need for depth.
Several federations lobbied for 30-player squads. FIFA said no. In December 2025, the governing body confirmed the cap stays at 26, and that decision has held through every update since.
That makes squad selection tighter than many coaches wanted, especially for teams aiming deep into the knockout rounds.
Club Release Rules and Training Squad
Players named in the final 26 must be released by their clubs by May 25, one day after the final club matchday on May 24. The only exceptions are players in the Champions League final, Conference League final, or CONCACAF Champions Cup final. Those clubs get until May 30 to release them.
Beyond the 26, managers can bring nine additional players to training, taking the full travelling squad to 35. These extra players can’t play in matches unless promoted through the injury replacement process. They’re there for sparring, backup cover, and to help the squad prepare during pre-tournament friendlies.
Injury Replacement Rules
A player can be replaced up to 24 hours before a team’s first match if they’re injured or ill. Two medical sign-offs are required: the team doctor’s and FIFA’s General Medical Officer’s.
The replacement doesn’t have to come from the preliminary list. Coaches can call up anyone, as long as the original player’s injury is confirmed severe enough to rule them out.
Goalkeepers get special treatment. If a goalkeeper suffers a serious injury or illness at any point during the tournament, not just before the first match, they can be replaced, subject to FIFA medical approval. The replacement wears the next available jersey number. Outfield players don’t get this flexibility. Once the team’s first match kicks off, their squad is locked for the rest of the tournament.
Two things to know about the general rule: it only applies to injury or illness, not form or tactical changes. And the 24-hour window is a hard cut-off for everyone except goalkeepers.
Key Managers Naming Their World Cup 2026 Squads
Six selections will draw the most attention:
Lionel Scaloni (Argentina): Defending champion manager. Scaloni’s challenge is balancing the 2022 winners with emerging talent as Messi’s final World Cup approaches.
Didier Deschamps (France): One of only three people to win the World Cup as both a player and manager. France will be among the favorites regardless of who he picks.
Thomas Tuchel (England): First World Cup squad of his coaching career. England fans will scrutinize every name after decades of tournament heartbreak.
Carlo Ancelotti (Brazil): His first World Cup in charge of the Seleção. Ancelotti’s selection will signal whether Brazil goes experienced or young.
Javier Aguirre (Mexico): Third stint managing El Tri. Home-nation pressure will be intense after Mexico’s unbeaten 2026 form, with wins over Panama, Bolivia, and Iceland, plus draws with Portugal and Belgium.
Mauricio Pochettino (USA): First World Cup as USA manager, and a home tournament. His final 26 will define American hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.
