How the UEFA Playoff Format Works

The 16 teams split into four independent paths. Each path holds exactly four teams and crowns one World Cup qualifier. Teams in different paths cannot meet unless both qualify for the World Cup itself.

Teams went into four pots based on FIFA Rankings from November 2025. Pot 1 teams host Pot 4 teams in the semi-finals. Pot 2 teams host Pot 3 teams. For path finals a separate draw decided which semi-final winner acts as host.

Every match uses knockout format. Win and advance. Lose and go home. Any match level after regulation goes to 30 minutes of extra time. Teams get one extra substitution in extra time for a maximum of six total. A penalty shootout decides the winner if scores stay level.

Yellow cards from the qualifying group stage carry over into the semi-finals. Cards reset completely before the finals.

World Cup UEFA Playoffs Qualified Teams

Top Seeds (Pot 1)

🇮🇹 Italy (FIFA Rank 9)

The four-time World Cup champions enter their third straight playoff. They lost to Sweden in 2018 and North Macedonia knocked them out in 2022. Italy began their 2025 qualifying campaign with a 3-0 home defeat to Norway in June which ended Luciano Spalletti’s reign. Gennaro Gattuso took charge on June 15, 2025 and guided Italy through qualifying to secure the playoff spot.

Norway won Group I with a perfect eight from eight record. Gattuso said: “My obsession is to go to the World Cup.” Italy drew Northern Ireland for the semi-final. They have not lost to Northern Ireland since 1958 and have not conceded against them in seven meetings since 1961.

🇩🇰 Denmark (FIFA Rank 20)

Denmark reached the Euro 2024 semi-finals and lost their final qualifying match to Scotland by one point on the last day. Boss Brian Riemer called it lifting “the fog of Scotland.” They face North Macedonia at home and enter Path D as clear favorites.

🇹🇷 Turkiye (FIFA Rank 26)

Turkey impressed at Euro 2024 and finished second behind Spain in qualifying. Home advantage against Romania makes Turkey the Path C favorites. Their squad depth gives them a clear edge over every opponent in their path.

🇺🇦 Ukraine (FIFA Rank 27)

Ukraine compete while their nation remains at war. They finished second behind France in qualifying. Their semi-final against Sweden takes place in Valencia, Spain as a neutral venue. Their team unity and emotional motivation have been their greatest strength throughout qualifying.

Seeded Teams (Pot 2)

🇵🇱 Poland (FIFA Rank 33)

Robert Lewandowski briefly walked away from international football in June 2025 after then-manager Michal Probierz stripped him of the captaincy. Probierz resigned. Jan Urban took over on July 16, 2025 and Lewandowski returned as captain. Poland finished second behind Portugal in qualifying. Lewandowski is 36 at the time of the March playoffs making this his final realistic shot at a World Cup.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales (FIFA Rank 34)

Wales finished second in their qualifying group and thrashed North Macedonia 7-1 in their final game with captain Harry Wilson scoring a hat-trick. Manager Craig Bellamy called it “as close to the perfect performance as I have seen.” Wales host Bosnia-Herzegovina at Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Tickets sold out immediately.

🇨🇿 Czechia (FIFA Rank 44)

Czechia finished second behind Switzerland in qualifying. Boss Miroslav Koubek warns that Republic of Ireland punishes teams that give them too much space. Czechia have won all three of their previous home games against Ireland and enter the semi-final as favorites.

🇸🇰 Slovakia (FIFA Rank 46)

Slovakia finished second behind Germany in qualifying. Their defensive organization is their biggest strength. They host Kosovo in a manageable semi-final with a genuine shot at the World Cup if they advance.

Group Runners-Up (Pot 3)

🇦🇱 Albania (FIFA Rank 61)

Albania finished second behind England in qualifying. Boss Sylvinho said: “Anything can happen in 90 minutes.” They are hard to break down and their task against Poland will be tighter than the ranking gap suggests.

🇮🇪 Republic of Ireland (FIFA Rank 62)

Ireland secured their playoff spot with a win over Portugal in qualifying. Boss Heimir Hallgrimsson said that result gave the players real belief. They travel to Czechia as the away side but carry genuine confidence.

🇧🇦 Bosnia and Herzegovina (FIFA Rank 75)

Bosnia finished second behind Croatia in qualifying. They face Wales at Principality Stadium. Previous playoff experience gives them a mental edge in one-off knockout matches.

🇽🇰 Kosovo (FIFA Rank 84)

Kosovo finished second behind England in qualifying. They face Slovakia away in the semi-final and have shown throughout qualifying that big occasions do not intimidate them.

Nations League Route (Pot 4)

🇸🇪 Sweden (FIFA Rank 40)

Sweden qualified through the Nations League after earning just one point from their four qualifying matches. Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked in October 2025. Graham Potter, who built his early coaching reputation at Östersund in Sweden, took over on October 20, 2025. Sweden beat Italy in the 2018 playoffs which shows their knockout quality.

But they enter March 2026 with a serious injury crisis. Alexander Isak suffered an ankle injury including a fibula fracture in December 2025 and underwent surgery. Dejan Kulusevski has missed the entire 2025-26 season after patella surgery. Potter said publicly: “Right now we are just keeping our fingers crossed and hopefully we can get some of those guys back.

But if not we have to find a solution with the guys that are available.” Viktor Gyökeres at Arsenal is Sweden’s most dangerous available player. A semi-final against Ukraine in Valencia is a brutal draw given the circumstances.

🇷🇴 Romania (FIFA Rank 47)

Romania qualified through the Nations League despite ranking higher than several group runners-up in the bracket. Their 47th-place FIFA ranking makes them more dangerous than a typical Pot 4 team. They face Turkey away in the semi-final and have the quality to cause an upset.

🇲🇰 North Macedonia (FIFA Rank 65)

North Macedonia shocked Italy 1-0 in the 2022 playoffs. They enter 2026 under new manager Goce Sedloski who took over in December 2025 after earning 100 caps as a player for the national team. Sedloski called the appointment “the greatest responsibility of my career.” They face Denmark away. Denmark is a much tougher test than Italy was in 2022 but the upset pedigree is genuine.

🇬🇧 Northern Ireland (FIFA Rank 69)

Northern Ireland qualified through the Nations League after finishing third in their qualifying group. Boss Michael O’Neill said ahead of the Italy semi-final: “I tend to look at it as an opportunity and that is how we will sell it to the players.” Northern Ireland face long odds against Italy but they earned this stage and have nothing to lose.

World Cup UEFA Playoff Pathway Analysis

Path A: Italy to qualify. Italy got the most favorable draw in the bracket. Northern Ireland have not beaten them since 1958. Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina await in the final. Both are beatable. After two straight exits Gattuso has every chance to finally deliver.

Path B: Ukraine to qualify. Ukraine vs Sweden is the best semi-final in the entire playoff round. Sweden arrive with Isak recovering from surgery and Kulusevski out all season. Even with Gyökeres fit the injury losses are too significant. Ukraine’s emotional strength and collective unity make them slight favorites. Poland should handle Albania with Lewandowski leading the line.

Path C: Turkiye to qualify. Turkey host Romania in a winnable semi-final. Romania’s ranking makes this tighter than it looks but Turkey’s home crowd is a genuine advantage. Slovakia should advance past Kosovo. The Path C winner faces the United States in Group D which adds enormous interest to this path.

Path D: Denmark to qualify. Denmark are the clearest favorites across all four paths. North Macedonia have upset pedigree but Denmark at home is a different challenge to Italy in 2022. Ireland beat Portugal in qualifying and will push Czechia hard. Regardless of who Denmark face in the final they have the quality to close it out.
