2026 FIFA World Cup Playoffs: Format, Teams, Schedule & How It Works

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first tournament with 48 teams. All 42 direct qualifiers are confirmed. Six final spots get decided through playoff matches in March 2026.

Two separate playoff tournaments settle everything. Europe runs its own system with 16 teams fighting for 4 spots. The rest of the world uses a different tournament where 6 teams battle for 2 spots.

This guide covers every confirmed matchup, the full schedule with kick-off times, how each system works and which World Cup groups the winners land in.

What are the 2026 World Cup Playoffs?

The World Cup playoffs give teams a second shot at the tournament. These are nations that came close in regional qualifying but missed out on direct spots as group winners.

FIFA built two separate systems for 2026. The first covers European teams only. The second pulls one team each from Asia, Africa, South America and Oceania, plus two teams from North America, into one global tournament.

Both tournaments run in the same week. Teams play one match. Win and you advance. Lose and you go home. No return legs and no aggregate scores.

Why Two Separate Playoff Systems?

Europe has 54 countries in World Cup qualifying and gets 16 total spots at the tournament. Twelve European teams already qualified directly as group winners. Four more spots go to playoff winners.

The rest of the world works differently. Each confederation sends one team to the global playoff. North America gets two spots because the USA, Canada and Mexico are co-hosts and qualified automatically. That creates a six-team bracket fighting for two spots.

Inter-Confederation Playoffs: The Global Battle

Six teams from five confederations compete for two World Cup spots. All four matches take place in Mexico during the same FIFA window as the UEFA playoffs.

How the Format Works

The two highest-ranked teams get a bye straight to the finals. DR Congo and Iraq skip the semi-finals entirely. The four unseeded teams play two semi-finals on March 26. The two winners then face the seeded teams in the finals on March 31. Both final winners qualify for the World Cup.

All matches are single-leg knockouts. A match level after 90 minutes goes to 30 minutes of extra time. Each team gets one extra substitution during extra time, making six total. A penalty shootout decides the winner if scores stay level.

DR Congo qualified by beating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the CAF playoff final in Rabat on November 16, 2025. DR Congo last appeared at a World Cup in 1974 when the country competed as Zaire.

Iraq qualified by beating UAE 3-2 on aggregate in the AFC playoff. A stoppage-time penalty from Amir Al-Ammari in the 90+17th minute sealed the second leg win. Iraq last appeared at a World Cup in 1986.

FIFA placed Jamaica and Suriname in separate pathways to avoid two CONCACAF teams meeting in the semi-finals. See the full Inter-Confederation Playoffs bracket for more details.

Key Storylines

DR Congo visa crisis: Mexico’s immigration authority initially rejected a collective visa application for the DR Congo squad. Players were required to apply individually. A Nigeria FIFA complaint over DR Congo player eligibility is also under investigation. No ruling has been issued as of March 2026 and DR Congo’s place remains unaffected.

Iraq’s stoppage-time drama: The 90+17th minute penalty that sent Iraq through is already one of the most dramatic moments in Asian qualifying history. They need just one win to reach their first World Cup since 1986.

Jamaica’s 28-year wait: Jamaica last played a World Cup in 1998. They face New Caledonia in the semi-final before a potential DR Congo final. Jamaica carry the strongest squad among the four unseeded teams with a deep pool of European-based players.

New Caledonia as massive underdogs: The Pacific island nation has a population under 300,000. Reaching the World Cup would rank among the biggest upsets in tournament history.

UEFA European Playoffs: Battle for 4 Spots

Sixteen European teams compete for four World Cup spots through a knockout tournament divided into four separate pathways. Each pathway produces exactly one World Cup qualifier.

How the System Works

FIFA seeded the 16 teams into four pots using the November 19, 2025 FIFA Men’s World Rankings. Pot 1 and Pot 2 teams host their semi-finals at home. Pot 3 and Pot 4 teams travel away. Final hosts were decided by a separate draw. Full seeding criteria and official playoff rules are available on UEFA.com. Each pathway has two semi-finals on March 26 and one final on March 31.

Pot 4 teams qualified through the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League rather than as group stage runners-up.

Key Storylines

Italy (Path A): Italy missed the 2018 and 2022 World Cups through back-to-back playoff exits. Under Gennaro Gattuso, appointed in June 2025 after Luciano Spalletti was sacked, they face Northern Ireland in the semi-final. Italy have not lost to Northern Ireland since 1958. A third straight playoff exit would rank among the biggest crises in Italian football history.

Sweden (Path B): Sweden reach the playoffs despite finishing bottom of their qualifying group. Dejan Kulusevski is ruled out entirely after patella surgery. Alexander Isak has been out since December with a fractured fibula. Viktor Gyökeres recovered from a November hamstring injury and was in outstanding Premier League form through February 2026. A fit Gyökeres gives Sweden a real threat against Ukraine.

Kosovo (Path C): Kosovo have never qualified for a World Cup or European Championship. Coach Franco Foda points to a five-game unbeaten run heading into March. A Kosovo qualification would be one of the great stories of the entire 2026 cycle.

Denmark (Path D): Denmark slipped out of direct qualification after a draw with Belarus and a defeat in Scotland. North Macedonia famously knocked Italy out in the 2022 playoffs. New North Macedonia coach Goce Sedloski, capped 100 times for his country, calls this the greatest responsibility of his career.
