FIFA World Cup 2026 Germany: Schedule, How to Watch, History & Record

Germany head to North America this summer with a lot to prove. Die Mannschaft sealed their spot at the 2026 World Cup with a dominant 6-0 win over Slovakia in November 2025.

They topped UEFA Group A with 15 points from 18. At the December draw in Washington D.C. Germany landed in Group E with Curaçao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador. The path back to the knockout rounds is clear.

Now the question is whether Julian Nagelsmann’s side can finally end two straight group-stage exits.

Key Records

Miroslav Klose scored 16 World Cup goals across four tournaments and holds the all-time record for any player in World Cup history. Lothar Matthäus made 25 World Cup appearances across five tournaments. Germany have finished third or better in 12 of their 20 appearances.

No other nation has stood on the podium in every decade a World Cup was held. Germany’s biggest win is 8-0 vs Saudi Arabia in 2002. Their biggest defeat is 8-3 to Hungary in 1954 — the same tournament they won the title.

Germany World Cup Predictions and Analysis

Germany have enough quality to go deep in 2026 but they carry real questions into the tournament.

Group E: Curaçao are the smallest nation by population ever to qualify and make easy opponents on paper. Ecuador are competitive but beatable. Ivory Coast are African champions and represent the genuine test of the group. The 20 June match in Toronto against Ivory Coast is the key game. A top-two finish should be achievable.

Musiala is back: Jamal Musiala broke his fibula and dislocated his ankle at the Club World Cup in July 2025. He returned to competitive action for Bayern in January 2026 coming off the bench to assist Michael Olise’s goal in a 5-1 win over Leipzig. By February 2026 he was back in regular first-team football. The Bundesliga confirms he is expected to start alongside Florian Wirtz in Nagelsmann’s attack.

Wirtz at Liverpool: Florian Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2025 for a confirmed ÂŁ100 million base fee, with up to ÂŁ16 million in add-ons taking the total package to ÂŁ116 million. His adaptation to the Premier League has been slow. Lothar Matthäus said publicly that Wirtz carries “self-doubt” at his new club. But Wirtz consistently performs to a higher level with Germany. Two assists in the 6-0 qualifying win over Slovakia showed his true quality on the international stage.

Goalkeeper concern: Marc-AndrĂ© ter Stegen tore his hamstring on January 31, 2026 while on loan at Girona, only two matches into that spell. He underwent surgery in February and has no confirmed return date. Nagelsmann called it “an extremely tragic situation” and said the situation “isn’t favourable” for a World Cup call-up. Oliver Baumann is the most likely starter in goal after strong qualifying performances.

Other names to watch: Joshua Kimmich captains the side with 106 caps of experience. Nick Woltemade led Germany’s qualifying scoring with four goals and fights Kai Havertz for the striker role. Seventeen-year-old Lennart Karl has broken through at Bayern and could make the final squad.

Germany have a 7.1% chance of winning the tournament according to Opta. That makes them a genuine outside threat rather than a favourite. Two consecutive group exits have been humbling but this squad looks more cohesive than the ones that failed in Russia and Qatar.
