2026 World Cup Inter-Confederation Playoffs: Teams, Bracket, Schedule & Format

Six nations get one final chance to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Two spots are still open. These teams travel to Mexico in late March 2026 and compete in a single-elimination tournament where one loss ends everything.

This guide covers the format, all six teams, the confirmed bracket, both venues, the full schedule with kickoff times and where the winners land at the World Cup.

2026 World Cup Inter-Confederation Playoffs

What are the 2026 World Cup Inter-Confederation Playoffs?

The official name is the FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament. It fills the last two spots in the 48-team World Cup field.

Six teams from five different confederations take part. UEFA is the only confederation not in this tournament. Europe runs its own separate 16-team playoff to fill four spots.

FIFA confirmed the slot allocation back in 2017. Each non-UEFA confederation gets one playoff spot. CONCACAF gets two spots because the United States, Mexico and Canada are the three co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup.

How the Inter-Confederation Playoff Format Works

The six teams split into two separate pathways. Each pathway ends with one team earning a World Cup spot — two qualifiers total.

FIFA seeds the teams using the official FIFA Men’s World Ranking from November 19, 2025. The top two ranked teams go straight to the finals. They skip the semi-finals and only need to win one match to reach the World Cup. The other four teams are unseeded and must win two matches in a row to qualify.

Stage 1 — Semi-Finals (March 26, 2026) Four unseeded teams play two matches. Winners move on. Losers go home.

Stage 2 — Finals (March 31, 2026) Each semi-final winner faces one seeded team. Both final winners earn a 2026 World Cup spot.

Seeded (Direct to Finals): Iraq (FIFA #58), DR Congo (FIFA #56) Unseeded (Must Play Semi-Finals): Jamaica, Bolivia, Suriname, New Caledonia

Every match is one game only. There are no return legs and no second chances. A match tied at 90 minutes goes to 30 minutes of extra time. Teams get a sixth substitution during extra time. A match still tied after extra time gets decided by a penalty shootout.

VAR technology covers goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity. Goal-line technology confirms whether the ball crossed the line. Yellow cards picked up in the semi-finals carry into the finals but do not carry forward to the World Cup itself. A red card brings an automatic minimum one-match ban.

World Cup 2026 Inter-Confederation Playoffs Bracket

The draw took place on November 20, 2025 at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. Six teams split into two pathways. Each pathway produces one World Cup qualifier.

The two seeded teams skip the semi-finals and wait in the finals. The four unseeded teams must win a semi-final first before facing a seeded side.

Inter-Confederation Playoff Match Venues in Mexico

FIFA picked Mexico to host all four matches. Both stadiums serve as official World Cup venues in summer 2026. FIFA uses this playoff window as a test run before the main tournament begins in June.

Estadio Akron (Guadalajara)

This stadium opened in 2015 as the home ground for Club Deportivo Guadalajara (Chivas). It holds 48,071 fans and has a covered roof over every seat. Guadalajara sits at 1,566 meters above sea level which can affect teams from sea-level countries. The stadium hosts four group stage matches during the 2026 World Cup.

Estadio BBVA (Monterrey)

CF Monterrey plays home games at this 2015-built stadium. Capacity sits at 53,500 fans. The steep seating design puts supporters very close to the pitch. Monterrey sits at 540 meters above sea level, lower than Guadalajara. This venue hosts three group stage matches and one Round of 32 match during the World Cup.

Both stadiums use natural grass and meet all FIFA standards for international competition.

Inter-Confederation Playoffs Qualified Teams

🇮🇶 Iraq (FIFA Rank 58)

Confederation: AFC (Asia) | Status: Seeded | Last World Cup: 1986

Iraq secured their spot with a dramatic finish in Asian qualifying. They beat the UAE 3-2 on aggregate in a two-legged playoff. A stoppage-time penalty from Amir Al-Ammari in the 90+17th minute of the second leg sealed the win. Iraq finished as the top-ranked team among the six playoff sides and goes straight to the Path 2 Final.

🇨🇩 DR Congo (FIFA Rank 56)

Confederation: CAF (Africa) | Status: Seeded | Last World Cup: 1974 (as Zaire)

DR Congo earned their place through a four-team CAF playoff mini-tournament. They beat Cameroon in the semi-final then defeated Nigeria 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final. This would be their first World Cup appearance under the name DR Congo. The country last appeared at the tournament in 1974 as Zaire.

🇯🇲 Jamaica (FIFA Rank 70)

Confederation: CONCACAF | Status: Unseeded | Last World Cup: 1998

Jamaica finished as one of the two best group runners-up in CONCACAF’s third qualifying round. They missed automatic qualification on the final matchday when Curaçao held them to a 0-0 draw and took the group spot. Many Jamaican players compete professionally in European leagues. Jamaica are the clear favorites to advance from the Path 1 semi-final.

🇸🇷 Suriname (FIFA Rank 123)

Confederation: CONCACAF | Status: Unseeded | Last World Cup: Never qualified

Suriname finished as the second-best CONCACAF group runner-up in their qualifying round. A World Cup spot would be the first in their national history. The squad includes Dutch-born players with Surinamese roots who compete professionally in the Netherlands.

🇧🇴 Bolivia (FIFA Rank 76)

Confederation: CONMEBOL (South America) | Status: Unseeded | Last World Cup: 1994

Bolivia finished 7th in South American qualifying and claimed the one available CONMEBOL playoff spot. They won just 4 of their 18 qualifying matches. Bolivia traditionally plays best at altitude in La Paz at 3,600 meters. Mexico’s venues sit far lower so that edge disappears entirely here.

🇳🇨 New Caledonia (FIFA Rank 149)

Confederation: OFC (Oceania) | Status: Unseeded | Last World Cup: Never qualified

New Caledonia reached the OFC final but lost 3-0 to New Zealand. As OFC runner-up they advanced to the inter-confederation playoffs. This is the first time OFC receives a guaranteed berth at this stage of World Cup qualifying. New Caledonia is a French Pacific territory with a population of around 270,000 people. Their presence here is a milestone for Oceania football.

Where Do the Winners End Up at the World Cup?

Inter-Confederation Playoffs 6 Teams Quick Preview

Iraq (Seeded) needs just one win. Their defensive setup is disciplined and they carry real momentum from the UAE playoff. They are the most likely team to qualify from this entire tournament.

DR Congo (Seeded) showed serious mental strength. They beat two African heavyweights to reach this stage. One more win sends them to their first World Cup in over 50 years. They go in as strong favorites.

Jamaica has the best realistic chance among the unseeded teams. Their European-based squad brings quality and professionalism. The Path 1 semi-final against New Caledonia is very winnable. Two solid performances take them back to the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Bolivia carries South American pedigree but their recent form is a concern. Four wins from 18 qualifiers is a tough number to overlook. The altitude advantage they rely on at home does not exist in Mexico.

Suriname has Dutch-trained players and nothing to lose. Bolivia is a beatable opponent. A place in the final against Iraq is not impossible. Long odds but not zero.

New Caledonia ranks 149th in the world. A win over Jamaica would be one of the biggest upsets in World Cup qualifying history. Their achievement in reaching this stage is the real story regardless of results.
